A GOOD MAN IS HARD TO FIND
1. Read Packet II pp. 34-46 “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” (O’Connor).
Also make sure you have read all of the text discussions in that packet–>Plot (6), Character (7),
Setting (16), Point of View (18), Symbolism (23), and Theme (27).
2. Print out the attached handout and add it to your class notes.
3. Write a short 1-2 page analysis responding to ONE of the following choices.
Explain the theme of materialism in Maupassant’s story. What statement is the storyteller making about status and possessions?
If this narrative is a cautionary tale, what are readers warned against?
Decide whether Montresor is a reliable or unreliable narrator in “The Cask of Amontillado.”
Explain what it is about his character and about his ability as a storyteller that make him either reliable or unreliable.
Review Flannery O’Connor’s story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find.” Write a one-page analysis:
Decide whether the grandmother is a sympathetic or unsympathetic character. Recall what the misfit says about her: “’She would of been a good woman’…’if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life’” (par. 140). Explain what he means by this.
