Project description
1.Address the problem of the “two Machiavellis” (i.e. that of The Prince and that of The Discourses) with regard to “citizenship”
2. Explain the degree to which Jon Locke’s “social contract” theory is compatible with republicanism as presented by Machiavelli in The Discourses.
3. Both John Locke and Thomas Hobbes begin their analyses of political life by placing human beings in a “state of nature.” Explain the differences and similarities between the two heuristic devices as employed by each author.
