Idiomatic dialogue influence

Assignment: You are to write a 4-5-page essay in which you take a position about a topic/theme that you identify from the Faulkner or Hurston short stories that we have read as a class. Your primary source of support for this argument paper will be the stories themselves, though you will have the option to bring in outside sources if you like. If you do so, however, you will need to provide the appropriate citations and a works cited list.
Among the possible themes or topics to consider are those we have raised in class discussion: race, gender, family dynamics, death, religion, social class and importance of region and/or history. From these broad concepts, one could create a question to address in an essay. Examples might include:
• What is the role of religion in the Hurston story?
• How does Faulkner define/complicate the notion of what it meant to be “a lady” in his story “A Rose for Emily”?
• How does Hurston’s use of idiomatic dialogue influence our understanding of her story and its setting?
• How does either author (or both) define a marriage/romantic relationship?
• Given the occasionally unsettling use of specific language and descriptions of racial tension in these stories, is it important for contemporary students to read them? Why or why not?
In terms of a structure for this paper, you will want to incorporate many of the strategies that you have developed over the course of the semester. For example, your introduction may very well include a brief summary of the story you are going to focus on in your paper, and your thesis will likely be the answer to the essay question that you select. As was true with the earlier assignments, you will also want to provide support for your thesis in subsequent paragraphs by using examples from the stories themselves. While there will be a number of quotations in this essay, you will want to be sure and introduce each quote effectively and also to provide explanation after each that ties it back to your main argument.
